A bloodstream infection can cause serious illness if not treated, and in people with PAH, it can quickly become life-threatening. If you think you may have an infection, contact your doctor or seek medical attention immediately.
Be alert for signs of infection
Knowing what to look for can help make sure you get treatment at the first sign of infection.
If you encounter any of the following symptoms, call your doctor immediately:
- You feel unusually weak
- You feel more tired than you normally do
- You have a fever
You should examine your catheter regularly for signs of an exit-site infection. Call your doctor if you notice any of the following at or near the exit site of your catheter:
- Redness
- Tenderness
- Warmth
- Firmness
- Discharge of any color
Talk to your doctor about steps you can take to mix your medication in a clean environment and prevent BSIs.
